Dog Birthday Cake!

This is undoubtedly the best dog cake recipe on the internet

This dog cake recipe comes from my experience trying to bake a cake for myself without maida or baking soda which gradually became a thing for dog birthdays in our house. It results in a beautifully spongy dog cake instead of a heavy blobby cake that general dog cake recipes yield.

The first ever dog cake, that I baked was during lockdown when our puppy turned one, we were so guilty of not showing her the world with long walks, dog cafes, lakes and beaches that I poured all my love and guilt into the cake. Although there are many dog bakeries that have opened up near our house in Bangalore but it has still remained a tradition for me to bake a cake for my babies.

Also our instagram page has a video recipe that you can follow along for this!

For the Cake Base:

  • 1.5 tablespoons honey
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 cup Oats flour (Just grind some oats if you can't find the flour, but grind it to finest consistency)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1/2 cup favourite food topper (Chicken Liver Powder or Fish Powder)

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup plain yogurt (unsweetened)
  • 2 tablespoons peanut butter (unsweetened, unsalted, no xylitol)
  • Optional: Treats for decoration

Part 1 - THE HARD PART - Egg Whites

  1. In a large mixing bowl, separate the egg white from egg yolks carefully.
  2. Start to froth the egg yolks either with a whisk and your hands, or a hand blender or a stand mixer. You have to whisk till you can see all the egg whites transform into a foam like consistency and no liquid left.
  3. Estimated time: Hand - 15 minutes + a free hand workout. Mixer - depends on the speed but between 5-8 minutes.

Part 2 - THE EASY PART - Mix Mix Bake Bake

  1. Combine the honey, coconut oil, oats flour, favourite food topper and egg yolks in a separate bowl. Mix until smooth. The food topper will add protein and flavour to the mixture. Please do not skip on the food topper because it is the star of the show. It really enhances the smell and taste of the whole thing.
  2. Now slowly start to add the whisked egg whites to this mixture making sure to not over whisk the little air bubbles you made.
  3. Grease a cake pan or muffin pan whichever shape you are using. You can also line it with parchment paper.
  4. Pour the cake batter into the prepared pan.
  5. Preheat your oven to 180°C for 10 minutes. (Careful to not let the dogs sniff close to a hot oven because by now they are surely interested in your batter).
  6. Bake the cake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes checking every 5 minutes post that, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  7. Once baked, remove the cake from the oven and let it cool in the pan for 10 minutes. Then, transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Part 3 - THE FUN PART - Frosting

  1. Strain or hang yogurt overnight or at least for 2-3 hours. If you dint get the time to do this step simply buy boxes of greek yogurt from the market.
  2. While the cake is cooling, prepare the frosting. You can edit this frosting recipe as per your dog's preferences. In a small bowl, mix together the hung yogurt and peanut butter until smooth.
  3. Once the cake has cooled, spread the frosting evenly over the top of the cake.
  4. If desired, decorate the cake with your dog's favourite treats, such as gluten free biscuits or jerkies.
  5. Place the decorated cake in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the frosting to set. Please avoid sugar decorations that are usually used for human cakes and opt for dog special treats for decorating the cake.

Part 4 - THE BEST PART - Tail wags!

  1. Serve the birthday cake to your dog and watch them enjoy their special day!

This dog cake is a delicious and wholesome way to celebrate your furry friend's special day be it birthdays or home coming days, christmas morning or just another day.
